IMPACT Summer Camp

In 2018, The URC launched the IMPACT Summer Camp, a program dedicated to providing summer programing to help strengthen children’s educational performance, enrich their awareness of community, educational, and global opportunities, as well as to empower them to dream of a positive future.

We partnered with local government entities, colleges, public servants and universities to provide a cutting edge opportunity for elementary and middle school children from low-income majority-black neighborhoods. We built bridges between schools, students, and opportunities by fostering an enriching environment.

IMPACT Summer Camp became the IMPACT Youth And Arts Program in 2022.

Homework Club

In 2017, The URC began a program that targeted second-graders at Jacox Elementary, a Title 1 school. Supported solely by volunteers, the Homework Club helped students with their reading and math homework, and offered mentoring opportunities. We are proud to have helped students in elementary and middle school achieve academic success at Jacox Elementary Chesterfield Academy, and Ruffner Middle School.

Thank you to all our volunteers who made this a success!

Caring for Our Kids

In response to COVID-19, Norfolk Public Schools shifted their schooling to on-line learning. As a result, the Urban Renewal Center provided learning and day care to working, minimum-wage families through the YMCA’s Virtual Learning Program. This program was held at neighborhood schools in Norfolk.

This campaign raised money to give kids a safe setting designed to support virtual learning, lesson completion, and activities that fostered social and emotional development.

NPACT (Norfolk Police and Clergy Together)

In 2017, The URC began Norfolk Police and Clergy Together (NPACT). The goal of this initiative was to strengthen the collaborative reach of police and faith based communities to deter crime. Police and Clergy worked in tandem to affect safer communities through active engagement with area residents. Clergy from various religious traditions, and from across Norfolk responded with officers to residents during community unrest or in the wake of violent crimes for critical response, to assist police for information, messaging/canvassing, and or provide calm. After much community success a similar pilot program was launched in Los Angeles.
