IMPACT Virtual Homework Club
Four years ago, The URC began a program that targeted second-graders at Jacox Elementary, a Title 1 school. Supported solely by volunteer, the Homework Club helps students with their reading and math homework and offers mentoring opportunities.
With Norfolk schools moving to virtual schooling in the Fall of 2020, the URC is expanding the Homework Club to three Norfolk Public Schools.
The Homework Club will launch at:
Jacox Elementary - second grade
Chesterfield Academy - second grade
Ruffner Middle School - sixth grade
In the elementary schools volunteers will focus on helping complete homework and providing social and emotional support. At the middle school level, volunteers will offer mentor opportunities including social and emotional support.
Volunteers can commit to one hour per week via Zoom.
Homework time can but isn’t limited to helping students read a passage, discussing what they've read to check comprehension and maybe some math. Or, even reading a book together., The time passes quickly, but the positive impact is lasting!
The URC will train volunteers and help them get all background checks through the Norfolk Public Schools.
If you are interested in volunteering, sign up here and we will reach out to you regarding the details.
